Wal-Mart Launches Online Store in Shenzhen
Business Value, 11/19/10
Wal-Mart's Sam's Club store in Shenzhen has gone online, with its online storefront currently undergoing open testing.
Wal Mart's Chinese e-commerce business operates under an independent division headed by the Wal-Mart China CFO. The Shenzhen Sam's Club online store represents the company's first foray into the e-commerce industry in China, and remains tightly bound to the physical store. For example, the online store shares a warehouse with the physical store, and has restricted its services to the Shenzhen area. In addition, sources have revealed that online income will simply be treated as a portion of overall revenues, rather than calculated through a separate accounting system, and that online pricing will not vary greatly from prices at the physical storefront.
Currently, customer service and delivery are contracted out to third-party providers. Products available online include toiletries, cosmetics, cleaning supplies, food and beverages, office and school supplies, maternity and childcare supplies, and household appliances.
