China Telecom Unveils Cross-Platform Video Service
Sina Tech, 11/10/10
China Telecom's (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) Shanghai video base has unveiled a new service, "Yi Shi Tong," which allows users to watch premium video content across PC, mobile and TV platforms.
Tri-Sun Electronic Technology, Intelligent Grouping and Resource Sharing (IGRS) Working Group, China Telecom and the local government will establish a joint venture to operate the service. Wang Gui, GM of Tri-Sun, said the JV will initially have approximately RMB 100 mln in funds, and subsequent funding is under discussion. Tri-Sun will provide an integrated communications platform, IGRS will draft standards, and China Telecom will provide network infrastructure and video content services.
Zhang Xuebin, chairman and CEO of Chinese electronics and set-top box manufacturer Skyworth Group (0751.HK), said that TV sets must have internet capability and meet IGRS's standards in order to use the service. Sun Yuning, CEO of IGRS Engineering Lab Ltd., said that over 20 terminals have already adopted IGRS standards, with a total sales volume of approximately 17 mln. A lack of terminals may become a barrier to China Telecom expanding the service, said Sun. The IGRS standards are open and terminal manufacturers may join voluntarily.
