China Mobile Announces Results of TD-SCDMA Handset Tender

China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) has released the preliminary results of its tender for 6 mln TD-SCDMA handsets. 12 domestically-produced products were selected (500,000 of each). Domestic vendor Huawei unexpectedly did not win any bids. Of the 12 products selected, 7 are low-end: two handsets from ZTE (0763.HK; 000063.SZ), and one each from China Wireless Technologies (2369.HK) subsidiary Yulong (Coolpad), TCL Communications (2618.HK), Hengxin, Lenovo (0992.HK), and Hisense, with an average price of RMB 450 and lowest price of RMB 348. Five mid-range products were also selected, with ZTE, Guangzhou New Postcom, Tianyu, Kong Profit Technology, and TCL Communications winning one tender each, with an average price of RMB 650 and lowest price of RMB 450.
None of the twelve are smartphones, though all come equipped with CMMB mobile phone TV functionality.
