China Unicom Begins Testing Microblog Platform

CCTIME, 10/28/10

China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) has begun testing "Wo Lianxi" (www.wolianxi.com), a free platform integrating microblogging functionality based on users' "real-world" connections. The service is being run under Unicom subsidiary China Unicom Newspace. At present, Wo Lianxi is still in closed beta testing, and is open only to users of Unicom's mobile mail service; in the future, it will be open to all users regardless of their telecom service provider.

After logging in to Wo Lianxi, users can select "I Say" from the user interface to post messages to be broadcast to their buddy list. "I Say" postings are limited to a maximum of 140 characters, and may also contain uploaded images and files of up to 2 Mb in size. Wo Lianxi can also help users manage their contacts by importing contact lists from their mobile phones, Outlook, or Foxmail. The service currently has clients for the Symbian and Windows Phone mobile platforms.
