Taobao Developing International E-Commerce Platform
Netease Tech, 10/26/10
Lu Peng, VP of strategic partnerships at C2C and B2C e-commerce site Taobao, has revealed that Taobao is currently developing a large-scale transnational e-commerce platform to be released in the near future.
Taobao previously cooperated with Yahoo Japan to launch Taojapan.com, but Lu said that because the platform primarily hosts numerous small transactions, its influence is limited.
Taobao is considering directly cooperating with overseas brands for the new platform in order to provide added convenience for domestic customers. At a later stage, Taobao will allow Chinese merchants to offer products to overseas customers over the platform. Beyond the website frontend, the platform will integrate the entire supply chain, including third-party partners, customs, logistics and distribution. Taobao is already building a dedicated warehouse in Shanghai for the platform. Lu declined to reveal the launch date for the platform.
Taobao also still plans to roll out its domestic local specialty products platform, which has already launched a Sichuan channel, to be followed by Hunan, Zhejiang and Xinjiang channels.
