Rumor: Alibaba to Launch E-Commerce Search Codes
Tencent Tech, 10/22/10
Alibaba Group will release an e-commerce ID code service for merchants on its B2B site Alibaba.com (1688.HK) and B2C site Taobao, according to an industry source. By inputting the code into Alibaba's eTao, Sohu's (Nasdaq: SOHU) Sogou, or Microsoft's Bing search engine, or in Taobao or Alibaba.com's on-deck search, users will be sent directly to a merchant's online store.
Some top-ranked merchants have already been informed about the "Shopcode" service, and said it will become their business card - even more important for marketing than their web, mobile, AliTalk credentials, particularly on their shipping boxes - and added they are already redesigning their logos to incorporate the number.
Alibaba has partnered with Hunan Satellite TV, Zhejiang Daily Press Group and Wasu Digital Television Media Group in the past two years to launch three media JVs: e-commerce portal HiTao, magazine Taobao Tianxia, and e-commerce site Taohua.com, all of which will also be supported by the code.
HiTao, Taobao Tianxia, and Taohua declined to comment on the rumors.
