ZTE Reveals Tablet PC Strategy
Netease Tech, 10/18/10
Wang Yong, deputy GM of mobile broadband at Chinese telecom equipment and handset vendor ZTE (0763.HK; 000063.SZ), has announced that ZTE will begin domestic sales of its tablet PCs at the end of 2010 or January 2011. ZTE will offer 5-6 tablet models next year.
Wang said ZTE has already received orders from Europe and the Asia-Pacific region for the tablets, but did not disclose the size of the orders or the names of the purchasing companies. Wang estimates that overseas markets will account for more than 60% of total sales.
Last week ZTE unveiled its first Android-based tablet PC, the Light (V9) at the 2010 P&T/Expo Comm China in Beijing, though the product has not yet reached the market.
China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) and China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) are in talks to carry the tablet, but Wang could not reveal the price of the ZTE Light, saying only it would be priced lower than the iPad.
Wang added that ZTE will mainly rely on bundled sales with operators, so retail prices will not be determined until after operators have announced their package prices.
The Light (V9) comes in both WCDMA and CDMA2000 models. Wang said ZTE also plans to release a TD-SCDMA version in 2011.
