Sogou CEO: Bing-Powered Taobao Search "Discomforting"

Sina Tech, 10/11/10

Wang Xiaochuan, CEO of Sohu's (Nasdaq: SOHU) online search subsidiary Sogou, has said that the new subsidiary will not see the results of any particular product development for at least six months, but added that the launch of Taobao's Etao search engine, powered by Microsoft's Bing, is "discomforting." Wang said that while search engines are usually either comprehensive or vertical, Etao appears to be neither.

Wang said that Alibaba Group's purchase of a 10% stake in Sogou for USD 15 mln will be completed by the end of the month, and the two companies will begin officially coordinating in early November.

Editor's Note: In August it was revealed that Alibaba Group and Sohu had reached an agreement to establish a subsidiary for joint development of Sohu's Sogou search engine.
