Shanghai Mobile to Offer Free Micro SIM Cards
Sohu IT, 9/27/10
Shanghai Mobile announced in a recent statement that it will replace subscribers' current SIM cards with Micro SIM cards free of charge, allowing subscribers to use their cards with the iPhone 4 and iPad. Between September 28 and October 18, subscribers with valid ID will be able to exchange their cards for Micro SIM cards at select Shanghai Mobile service centers: a total of 5,000 cards will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Subscribers will also receive an RMB 60 recharge card for mobile data services. After the initial batch of 5,000 Micro SIM cards is gone, service centers will accept pre-orders - one per customer - for Micro SIM cards with valid subscriber ID; subscribers who pre-order will also receive an RMB 60 mobile data recharge card. The service centers will subsequently notify subscribers when new Micro SIM cards arrive.
Editor's Note: Following the September 25 launch of iPhone 4 sales, China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) has also resumed sales of USIM cards for the iPhone 4 and iPad. The USIM cards are currently available only for Unicom subscribers under contract for the iPhone 4, and are not available for purchase by other subscribers at present.
