Rumor: China Unicom App Store Delayed Indefinitely
CCID, 8/30/10
China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) has reportedly indefinitely postponed the launch of its "Wo" App Store, originally slated to open August 19, due to a series of unresolved issues, according to a source within China Unicom.
According to the source, Heilongjiang Unicom and Shanghai Unicom began preparations for their own respective app stores before China Unicom officially opened bidding to construct its national app store. Heilongjiang Unicom partnered with Chinese telecom equipment manufacturer ZTE (0763.HK; 000063.SZ), while Shanghai Unicom partnered with Huawei. China Unicom ultimately selected Shanghai as the base of operations for the app store but replaced Huawei with ZTE as project partner. After being selected, ZTE began retooling the platform designed by Huawei, but after six months a number of problems remain to be solved, including domain name and third-party payment issues.
