China Unicom to Launch iPhone 4 by Year-end

At a press conference for China Unicom's (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) interim earnings report yesterday evening, GM Lu Yimin said he was confident that Unicom would launch sales of the iPhone 4 this year, adding that Unicom is currently in talks with Apple and hopes to have a deal in place as soon as possible. Lu also predicted that Unicom would spend a total of RMB 3 bln to RMB 5 bln on handset subsidies for the year. That figure is more than twice the amount laid out in H1, indicating that Unicom intends to step up 3G promotional efforts in the second half of the year.
Editor's Note: Unicom CFO Tong Jilu said that in addition to the iPhone 4, Unicom plans to introduce more than a dozen new smartphones at prices ranging from RMB 1,000 to RMB 7,000 in H2 of this year.
