The9 to Shut Down Self-Developed MMO

On October 21, Chinese game operator The9 (Nasdaq: NCTY) will cease operations of its self-developed 2D cartoon-style scrolling game Joyful Journey West. The game has already ceased accepting new user registrations or account recharges.

Over the five years since its public beta release in July 2005, Joyful Journey West has consistently underperformed.

Following the "de-shelving" of all in-game props available for sale in Joyful Journey West, gamers' unused credits will be automatically transferred to the "e-wallet" associated with their The9 account, where they can be used to recharge account balances for other The9-operated games.
