Rumor: China Unicom Begins "Wireless City" Tender
CWW, 8/17/10
An industry source claims that China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) recently began a nationwide tender for WLAN "Wireless City" projects covering an estimated 200,000 pieces of equipment, two-thirds of which are access point ("AP") equipment and one-third of which is access controller ("AC") equipment.
The source also revealed that China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) recently concluded part of its Wireless City trials and will launch a large-scale equipment tender around October. China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK), continuing on last year's Wireless City trials in Xiamen, Guangzhou, and other cities, will also launch a nationwide tender in the near future.
Ni Haiyang, VP of wireless network access equipment maker Autelan Technology, said that all three operators have sought to procure 802.11n equipment in their Wireless City tenders this year. According to the leaked Unicom tender notice, 802.11n equipment will account for about 20% of equipment, and 802.11n is expected to become the standard specification for equipment in future tenders.
