Rumor: Baidu to Unveil PC Manager App, Software Search
DoNews, 8/16/10
An inside source at Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) has confirmed that the Chinese search company will launch a PC manager application in early September, at which time the company's software search service will also go online. Another source said that Baidu is also planning to launch a client for enterprise instant messaging and e-mail in late August or early September, along with an updated Pinyin input method editor (IME) and other software products.
The Baidu insider said that the new PC manager application will integrate downloading, software management, and anti-virus functionality, will incorporate a download accelerator, and use a "cloud installation" model. Baidu is reportedly preparing to begin promoting the new application. According to the company's plans, download sites that promote the product will receive a revenue share; download partners will be required to provide an additional link to Baidu's "high-speed download" for the application on the download page.
Download sites will be able to provide data in a Baidu-specified XML format on available software downloads to Baidu's software search vertical site. Baidu Software Search will parse the data and display it to users, allowing for applications to be listed by download speed, download site security, software security, and other metrics.
