Apple Retails iPhone 3GS Below Unicom Prices
Beijing Times, 8/11/10
A reporter for the Beijing Times found yesterday that a WiFi-enabled iPhone 3GS sold for RMB 3,999 in the Beijing Apple Store - RMB 1,000 cheaper than if purchased through China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH). Unicom said that sales of the WiFi-enabled iPhone fall into two categories: phone plus contract sales made through Unicom service centers, and sales of the contract-free handset through subsidiary Unicom Huasheng's website. In both cases, the phone is priced at RMB 4,999.
A Unicom employee working in matters related to iPhone sales said that according to the operator's deal with Apple, both companies are required to offer the phones at the same price points. The RMB 1,000 price difference could be the result of miscommunication between Apple and Unicom, he said, adding that Unicom is now aware of the problem and has contacted Apple. The matter currently remains unresolved.
