China Issues New TV Energy Efficiency Standards

China's new "Energy Efficiency Limits and Efficiency Ratings for Flat-Panel Televisions," which take effect on December 1, divide energy efficiency standards for flat-panel TVs into three rankings; high energy-consuming TVs that don't fall into any of the three ranks will be removed from the market. All new products will be marked with a new "Energy Efficient" logo.
Class-1 products, under the new efficiency rules, correspond to the most energy-efficient products currently on the market; Class-2, to products of average efficiency. Class-3 products correspond to current entry-level products; this category will be used mainly to eliminate energy-hungry products currently on the market.
According to test results from the National Testing and Inspection Center for Radio & TV of China, only 2.4% of LCD televisions currently on the market would rank as Class-1 products under the new energy efficiency standards. 10.8% of LCD TVs being sold would be Class-2 products, and 72.3% would be Class-3 products; the remaining 14.5% of products will no longer be salable as of December 1.
