CNNIC: China Hits 420 Mln Internet Users

The China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) issued its 26th report on the state of development of China's internet today, showing that as of June 2010, China had 420 mln internet users, up 36 mln users from the end of 2009, with a 31.8% penetration rate, up 2.9 percentage points from the end of 2009.

Broadband internet users reached 363.81 mln, reaching a 98.1% penetration rate among all fixed-line internet users.

Mobile internet users reached 277 mln, adding 43.34 mln over the past half year, a growth of 18.6%. Of the total mobile internet users, those for whom mobile phone was the only means of internet access reached 11.7%.

Rural internet users reached 115.08 mln, accounting for 27.4% of all internet users, up 7.7% over the half-year period.

China had 11.21 mln registered domain names, including 7.25 mln in the .CN top-level domain.

Compared to the end of December 2009, an increasing percentage of internet users chose to access the net from home (88.4% compared to 83.2% at the end of 2009) and work (33.2% compared to 30.2% at the end of 2009), while the percentage accessing from Internet cafes dropped (33.6% compared to 35.1% at the end of 2009).

Usage of handsets and notebooks to access the Internet continued to increase since the end of 2009, with the percentage of users accessing the Internet via handset growing by 18.5% (from 233 mln users in 2009 to 277 mln in H1 2010, comprising 60.8% of Internet users in 2009 and 65.9% in H1 2010, respectively), and that accessing via notebook growing by 31.1% (from 118 mln users in 2009 to 155 mln in H1 2010, comprising 30.7% of Internet users in 2009 and 36.8% in H1 2010, respectively), while the percentage of users accessing via desktop PC rose only 9.7% (from 282 mln users in 2009 to 309 mln in H1 2010, comprising 73.4% of Internet users in 2009 to 73.6% in H1 2010).

Internet users spent more time online each week, up to an average of 19.8 hours per person.
