Chinese Music Site Top100 to Bring On New Investor
Tencent Tech, 7/13/10
Gary Chen, CEO of Beijing-based online music provider Orca Digital, the operator of Top100.cn, has said that the site has seen a slight drop in traffic over the past few months following shifts in Google's China search business, and that Orca Digital may bring on a new investor before the end of the year. Chen said the company plans to release a self-developed mobile application, and will consider introducing fee-based services.
According to one industry source, Google search previously accounted for 60-70% of Top100's traffic. Chen said that the site's traffic had been impacted by Google's withdrawal, but that the drop was not severe - only 5% - and that Top100 sees 7-8 mln downloads and clicks to listen online every day.
Chen said that over the past three or four months, the company has been forced to take charge of the majority of its ad sales business on its own, but that even without the aid of Google, Top100 has brought on Intel as an ad client, and grown its sales team to 30 people.
Top100 currently offers 3.15 mln songs for online listening and download, a figure that continues to grow. Chen estimated that by year-end, Top100's music library will grow larger than that of Apple's iTunes store.
