Baidu Employees Involved in Online Gambling

People.com.cn, 7/09/10

On the morning of July 8, China's Ministry of Public Security publicized a list of ten major illegal online gambling cases, including that of two employees at the Guangzhou branch of Chinese internet company Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) surnamed Lu and Wang, who obtained over RMB 600,000 by providing promotional services to gambling sites.

In a statement, Baidu's public relations department expressed its regret toward the actions of its employees, adding that Baidu resolutely opposes illegal internet activity.

From 2009 to the present, the two employees in the value-added service operation department of Baidu's Guangzhou branch knowingly provided search engine marketing services to an online gambling site, by which Wang earned over RMB 100,000, and Lu earned over RMB 450,000. Lu is being held in criminal detention, and Wang is currently awaiting trial on bail.
