Guangzhou Mandates ID Card Swipe at Internet Cafes

South CN, 6/09/10

A spokesperson for the Copyright Bureau of Guangzhou revealed that starting in July, internet cafes in Guangzhou will require users to swipe their second-generation government-issued ID cards. Prior to June 30, Guangzhou's approximately 1,000 officially registered internet cafes will install login systems that will make use of the second-generation ID cards.

The spokesperson said that installation of an ID card access system would cost approximately RMB 4,000 per café. The source also said that the government will not compel internet café owners to purchase any one reader system; internet café owners may choose freely from any of the approximately 10 ID reader systems that comply with national standards.
