Carriers to Invest RMB 11 Bln in Shanghai in 2010

On June 8, the Shanghai subsidiaries of China's three major telecom operators signed a "2010 Service Partnership Agreement," under which the operators pledged to invest a total of RMB 11 bln in Shanghai this year, to be used to improve telecommunications service quality. Shanghai Telecom will invest in bringing 2Mbps and faster connections to more than 90% of its home broadband subscribers; Shanghai Mobile will work to achieve full TD-SCDMA coverage; Shanghai Unicom will bring 100Mbps broadband access to 70% of its subscribers, and 8Mbps or faster access to all of its subscribers.
Editor's Note: According to a separate report from Sohu IT, RMB 5 bln of the total RMB 11 bln will be invested by Shanghai Telecom. According to the agreement, Shanghai Telecom will add another 250 wireless base stations and 500 Wi-Fi hotspots this year, and aims to reach 1.5 mln IPTV subscribers, including 100,000 high-definition IPTV subscribers.
Shanghai Telecom had 1.3 mln IPTV subscribers in mid-May.
