MIIT Announces April 2010 Telecom Statistics

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has released its April 2010 telecom industry statistics. The figures for the month were as follows:
Telecom operating revenues were RMB 78.6 bln (USD 11.5 bln), bringing the cumulative year-to-date total to RMB 299.8 bln (USD 43.9 bln), up 6.5% over the same 4-month period of 2009. Core services accounted for RMB 284.6 bln (USD 41.7 bln) of the cumulative total, up 5.7% YoY. Year-to-date capital expenditure came to RMB 46.4 bln (USD 6.8 bln), a 28.4% year-on-year decrease.
Total telephone subscribers saw a net increase of 8.5 mln in April, with mobile subscribers growing by approximately 9.6 mln to 786.5 mln, and fixed-line subscribers dropping by 1.1 mln to approximately 307.5 mln. Broken down by traditional fixed-line and PHS, the PHS subscriber base declined by approximately 1.3 mln subs to 39.2 mln, while traditional (i.e. non-PHS) fixed-line subscribers increased by approximately 0.1 mln to 268.3 mln.
A total of over 64.6 bln SMS messages were sent during the month of April, bringing the total for 2010 to 270.2 bln, a 5.9 % increase over the 2009 figure.
Broadband added 1.7 mln new registered users in April to reach a total of 111.0 mln. In contrast, dial-up lost another 60,000 users, lowering the total dial-up user base to 7.1 mln.
