China Mobile Pushes M2M in Wireless Wireline
Communications Weekly, 5/24/10
In Chongqing and other cities, China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) recently launched an all-in-one TD-SCDMA wireless wireline device integrating home security, internet access, entertainment, home appliance remote control, and phone functionalities. A technician at Lenovo (0992.HK), the manufacturer of the device, said that the terminal incorporates an accelerometer and temperature sensors, among other modules. A source at another manufacturer predicted that TD-SCDMA wireless wireline terminals incorporating rich M2M (machine-to-machine) applications will be a mainstay of China Mobile's customized devices in the future.
The GM of customer services at a city-level subsidiary of Fujian Mobile said that the growth of TD-SCDMA wireless wireline subscribers essentially relies on the efficacy of the operator's marketing policies. All of China Mobile's TD-SCDMA wireless wireline terminals are given away with a pre-purchase of calling credit, the source said, adding that such costs are so high as to be unsustainable over the long-term.
