China Mobile: Wireless Wireline to Boost 3G Subs
Sohu IT, 5/16/10
Wang Jianzhou, president of China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK), said in Ningbo yesterday that Chinese operators, along with the entire ICT industry, are actively seeking overseas investment or direct acquisition opportunities. Wang added, however, that China Mobile would not consider acquiring any European operators for the time being, saying that any overseas acquisition would require China Mobile to first ensure that the acquisition price was 'reasonable,' while European telecom assets are currently priced too high.
Wang said that many manufacturers, including chipmaker Marvell, now say that RMB 1,000 or lower smartphones are a possibility, and that many computer and handset manufacturers are making concerted efforts in this area. Asus recently said that it is committed to releasing an RMB 1,000 3G smartphone.
Wang added that in addition to RMB 1,000 smartphones, wireless wireline growth will be of great help in the operator's efforts to increase the number of TD-SCDMA network subscribers.
