Baidu Aims for Higher Search Quality in Japan

DoNews, 4/29/10

Robin Li, CEO of Chinese online search company Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU), said during the company's earnings call that Baidu benefited by no small amount from Google's announced adjustment to its China strategy during the first quarter.

Li added that Baidu has no present plans to enter the travel industry. The search engine's travel channel went online a year ago.

With regard to the company's overseas strategy, Li said that Baidu is currently in the process of improving the quality of its products in the Japan market, and that Baidu will kick off a marketing campaign as soon as search quality is up to par. Li revealed that Baidu still needs several years before it can expect to see revenue from Japan. Li emphasized that in the long-term, Japan will be a key market for Baidu's overseas expansion.
