Rumor: China Unicom to Offer RMB 36 3G Plan

According to the Test3G mobile network forums and Guangdong Unicom, China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) will roll out new calling plan packages nationwide in May. Among the new calling plans will be new iPhone bundles requiring only a RMB 96 per month contractual calling fee, and a plan for users to receive a 16 GB iPhone 3GS at no extra charge if they sign a contract with a RMB 286 per month fee.

China Unicom will also release a new RMB 36 per month calling package that includes free nationwide incoming calls, caller ID and mobile e-mail, but also comparatively higher calling rates. Each package has seen an increase in the number of calling minutes, but a substantial reduction in data transfer allotted. Video calling rates have been reduced to RMB 0.6 per minute. China Unicom will also offer calling plans tailored for users that primarily use voice or data services.
