China Telecom Eyes Hong Kong 3G Spectrum

C114, 4/08/10

In a submission to Hong Kong's Office of the Telecommunications Authority (OFTA), China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) has criticized the quality of PCCW's CDMA network, at the same time hinting that it may participate in the bidding for 3G CDMA network spectrum in Hong Kong. China Telecom's submission to the OFTA suggested that China Telecom plans to build an 850 MHz CDMA network in Hong Kong; the mobile operator also requested that OFTA reduce spectrum utilization fees.

Hong Kong's OFTA plans to auction 850 MHz, 900 MHz and 2100 MHz spectrum, and said it has sufficient spectrum to support the construction of new public networks by the operators covering the entire Special Administrative Region.

PCCW has previously attempted to sell its WCDMA network to China Telecom, which declined due to the price.
