Shenzhen Police to Protect Online Virtual Property
Legal Daily, 4/06/10
The Shenzhen People's Government recently published a "Whitepaper for Public Services of the Shenzhen Public Security Bureau," indicating that protection of online virtual property rights will fall within the jurisdiction of the Shenzhen PSB.
The whitepaper laid out the following timetable:
- Before the end March 2010, the Shenzhen Public Security Bureau will work with major game operators to determine necessary conditions for the protection of netizens' online virtual property, and will draft plans for recovery procedures for cases in which Shenzhen netizens' online property or equipment is lost or stolen.
- Before the end of June, the Shenzhen PSB will investigate virtual property or equipment recovery service workflows to serve local netizens (i.e., local internet users with Shenzhen permanent household registrations) who play local games (i.e., games operated by Shenzhen-registered companies).
- Before the end of September, the Shenzhen PSB will expand the scope of virtual property recovery services for local games (operated by Shenzhen-registered companies) to include all local internet users with Shenzhen residence permits.
- By the end of December, the Shenzhen PSB will explore mechanisms for cross-jurisdictional collaborations, establishing recovery services for Shenzhen residents who play games operated by companies registered outside the city.
