SARFT Confirms Issuance of Internet TV Licenses
Sina Tech, 4/01/10
Zhu Hong, spokeswoman for China's State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT), confirmed yesterday that the first three Internet TV licenses have been issued to China Network Television (CNTV), the Oriental Media Group (SMG), and Hangzhou-based Wasu Digital Media.
Wasu president Li Yiqing said that the companies are currently preparing to comply with the licenses' regulations regarding partnerships and other matters, specifics of which will be released in mid- to late April. On March 29, Chinese consumer electronics manufacturer TCL (000100.SZ) announced in Hong Kong that it would partner with Wasu on developing internet TV content. Rival Chinese electronics makers Hisense (600060.SH) and Tsinghua Tongfang (600100.SH) had previously announced partnerships with SMG and CNTV, respectively.
A spokesperson for SARFT said that more internet TV licenses would "certainly" be issued in the future.
