Android Sales Beat OPhones in Beijing's Zhongguancun
CCTIME, 4/01/10
Recently, reporters sent to interview mobile phone retailers in Beijing's Zhongguancun hi-tech district have discovered that Google's Android-based smartphones are selling very well, while sales of China Mobile's (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) OPhones are lagging far behind.
Save for a few single-brand retailers, almost all mobile phone retailers offered Android-based handsets. G2 and G3 series handsets, selling for approximately RMB 2,300 - 2,800, were available at seemingly every counter. Sales staff said they sold 7-8 Android-based handsets per day, with sales jumping on the weekends to 10 or more per day.
Sales staff said that OPhones were selling well several months ago, but that sales volume had been declining of late, with many customers inquiring about the phones but few making purchases. In a survey of retailers, reporters discovered that many retailers did not even have OPhone handset samples available.
