Tencent Tech, 3/30/10
According to informed sources, Chinese internet company Shanda Interactive (Nasdaq: SNDA) acquired a controlling stake in copyright distributor Sunshine Media (Shengshi Jiaoyang) last year. According to the source, Sunshine Media's core goal in 2010 is to establish a system of independent copyright purchasing and distribution channels for popular video content from the past 3-5 years. The video content owned by Sunshine Media is primarily from CCTV, Beijing Hualu Baina Movie Company, HTV Film, Enlight Media, Asia TV (ATV), Hong Kong Universe International, KBS Korea, MBC Korea, and the Nanjing Military District Political Office Television Arts Center. Internal documents show that, as a Shanda subsidiary, Sunshine Media has developed a copyright sharing and purchasing partnership with China Network Television (CNTV), CCTV's online video site. Informed sources say that in the future Sunshine Media will sell content licenses to web sites, internet cafes, movie theaters, theme parks, and new media. Sunshine Media COO Zha Wenyi has said that the company will develop partnerships with internet café industry associations nationwide, helping more internet café operators learn how to adopt a licensed content model to run their businesses.
Established in July 2009, Sunshine Media is a cross-media movie and television program distributor. According to its official documents, the company owns at much as 80% of the copyrights and channels for the new media market, and has simultaneous broadcast rights for more than 30,000 classic movies and television shows.
