Alibaba Offers AliExpress for Free

ShanghaiBuisiness, 3/16/10

Chinese B2B e-commerce company Alibaba.com (1688.HK) has scrapped membership fees for small-scale exporters. Alibaba's international website now allows sellers to register free-of-charge for its AliExpress service, which was previously available only to those who paid a RMB 19,800 annual membership fee.

According to a customer service representative, no fees are charged unless a transaction is made, and a 5% commission is charged on all transactions. The system will automatically add this 5% fee to the price supplied by the seller, and display the final number to overseas buyers. According to an Alibaba employee, the free AliExpress service is targeted only at small wholesale transactions worth less than USD 600; the policies for large transactions have not changed.
