Rumor: Google Seeks to Retain Presence in China

TechWeb, 3/12/10

Google may cease censoring results on its search engine Google.cn in the next several weeks, but will not completely withdraw from China, according to industry sources. One source close to the discussions with Chinese authorities said Google could sign separate agreements with various Chinese government bodies in a "patchwork" solution. The source said this would be one way for Google to avoid a 100% departure from China.

Google is unwilling to filter certain search results on Google.cn. Should Google.cn be closed down as a result, Google will continue to operate sales, R&D and other businesses in China, including investment in Chinese firms.
