MIIT Targets Network Convergence Trials in May

China Daily, 3/05/10

Li Yizhong, head of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), said in a recent interview that the MIIT aims to finalize plans for network convergence trials by the end of April, and is currently drafting plans with the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT).

Li said once the two regulators have determined how the telecom and broadcasting operators will enter one another's markets, trial sites will be selected, with each trial site selecting a trial company and setting clear regulations. Afterwards, MIIT and SARFT are to issue licenses. Li said he hoped the plan would be approved by mid-May, and trials are to be run until 2012.
