Rumor: Shanda Establishes E-Reader Subsidiary

Sohu IT, 2/05/10

Chinese Internet firm Shanda Interactive (Nasdaq: SNDA) reportedly established a new subsidiary, Guoke Electronics, in late December, which will release e-reader hardware products and an online literature website in the near future, according to an industry source.

Guoke was established on December 26, 2009, and is dedicated to providing customers with Internet-enabled electronics products.

Guoke, which takes its name from an online novel, is reportedly on the verge of releasing its first product, an online literature e-reader device.

Shanda's first e-reader product will be called the Bambook (Chinese name: Lianhuanshu), and will come equipped with 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity as well as allow users to download books from Shanda's online literature websites. No price, however, has been revealed.

Shanda Games (Nasdaq: GAME) CEO Tan Qunzhao refused to grant Sohu IT an interview, while Shanda Literature CEO Hou Xiaoqiang could not be reached at press time.
