Xunlei to Terminate Video Upload
Sina Tech, 2/05/10
Luo Weimin, COO for online video service provider Xunlei, has said that Xunlei has already begun deleting content for which copyright ownership cannot be determined. The deletions will be complete within 1-2 months. In addition, Xunlei plans to terminate user video upload functionality at the end of February.
Informed sources say that Xunlei will begin displaying sources for all of its copyrighted material in the frame above the video.
Xunlei plans to offer a premium online video service called "Ruby Theater" after the Chinese New Year. Via Ruby Theater, Xunlei plans to provide advertisement-free, licensed video content to users. According to internal estimates, the cost for a single video-on-demand movie will not exceed RMB 1-2, and monthly subscribers will pay no more than a few tenths of an RMB per movie.
According to Luo, Xunlei's 100%-licensed-content online video service, Kankan, is already profitable on the whole, and the company plans to continue to develop advertisement and fee-based service revenue to support the growth of its online video services.
