MIIT Releases 2009 Telecom Industry Statistics

According to statistics released by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), China's telecom industry contributed RMB 501.22 bln to the national economy in 2009, up 7% YoY, while average telecom prices dropped 9% YoY. Total SMS volume reached 784.04 bln messages, up 10.2%. Telecom operators recorded RMB 192.bln in revenues from value-added services, up 12.8% YoY, accounting for 22.8% of total primary business revenues compared to 21.3% in 2008.
The total number of Internet users in China grew by 86 mln in 2009 to reach 384 mln, with a penetration rate of 28.9%. Of these, broadband Internet users increased by 76 mln to reach 346 mln, accounting for 90.1% of total Internet users. Mobile Internet users grew by 120 mln to reach 233 mln, accounting for 60.8% of total Internet users. The number of rural Internet users grew by 22 mln to reach 107 mln, accounting for 27.8% of total users.
MIIT estimates that in 2010, primary business revenue for China's telecom industry will reach RMB 880 bln, growing 4.5% YoY; the number of fixed-line telephone subscribers will drop 28 mln to 285 mln total; the number of mobile subscribers will reach 855 mln, up 108 mln new subscribers; the number of registered broadband accounts will grow by 20 mln to reach 123 mln total; and average telecom fees will drop 9% YoY.
