China to Limit Discounts for Online Bookstores

ChinaByte, 1/11/10

The Publishers Association of China, the Books and Periodicals Distribution Association of China and the China Xinhua Bookstore Association have jointly issued regulations concerning fair competition among booksellers. The regulations will take effect after being approved and amended by relevant government agencies. The regulations require publishers to control the retail price of new publications for the first year after release, prohibiting discounts for brick-and-mortar bookstores and limiting discounts to no more than 15% for online booksellers.

One industry insider said he believes the regulations will have the biggest impact on e-commerce websites Joyo-Amazon and Dangdang, should they take effect.
