Chinese P2P online video and download accelerator provider Xunlei opened its Nanjing Online Gaming R&D Center in the Nanjing New & High Technology Industry Development Zone's Software Park in mid-December.
Li Jian, head of operations at Xunlei, said a VP will be dispatched from headquarters to oversee preparations and operations at the center, that a team of over 30 personnel are already working on projects at the facility, and that the center will release its first game before long. The team is expected to grow to 60 employees within a year and reach 200 within two years. Li said that once operational, the center will primarily release casual and browser games. Casual games will mainly rely on selling virtual items to generate profits, but Xunlei is also considering in-game advertising in the future to expand revenue channels. Li estimates the center will generate RMB 50 mln in revenues by the end of 2010, and annual revenues will reach RMB 100 mln in the next three years. Xunlei plans to spin-off the center in an IPO if it reaches its targets.
Xunlei's gaming operations reported over RMB 100 mln in combined revenues in 2009, accounting for 40% of total revenues.
