China Mobile Launches South China Base

China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) announced at a launch ceremony today that its South China base has been established with an investment of RMB 6.6 bln. The facility is a key management support base for the telecom operator, and is expected to become a center for IT network support, product R&D, and promotion of industry clustering, and to promote exchange for cooperation. At the ceremony, China Mobile chairman and CEO Wang Jianzhou said that China Mobile has already reserved a large area of low-cost land in and around its south China facility in preparation for the construction of an industrial park for its partners.
Already, 37 corporations, including content and service providers such as Sohu (Nasdaq: SOHU) and Netease (Nasdaq: NTES) and terminal providers such as Nokia have signed agreements with China Mobile to establish presences in the industry park.
The base is located in the Tianhe Software Park in Guangzhou.
Editor's Note: According to Guangdong Mobile president Xu Long, 147 employees have begun working in the industry park, and the park will host an estimated 1,000 employees by 2010, including 486 from China Mobile and 500 from its partners.
China Mobile's South China centralized support system also launched this morning. Following the launch, the center will provide centralized management and control services to China Mobile's network operations support system, network management system, and management information system. Currently, the South China facility's centralized support system provides remote support services to the company's Tibet, Hong Kong, and Pakistani (CMPak) subsidiaries, enhancing their operations and maintenance support capabilities and effectiveness, and providing service outsourcing within the China Mobile Group.
