Rumor: TCL, Changhong Establish Internet TV Content JV
Southern Metropolitan News, 12/23/09
Chinese TV manufacturing rivals Changhong (600839.SH) and TCL Corporation (000100.SZ) will reportedly join forces and establish a joint venture to develop Internet TV content, according to an industry source.
The source claims that the JV will require an amount of capital investment similar to that of a web start-up, which the two companies are prepared to provide.
A reporter for Southern Metropolitan News also discovered that the joint venture may include Chinese VOD website Voole, which recently sued TCL for copyright infringement, but no final agreement has been reached yet.
A source at Voole said the company originally targeted the PC market, but began to focus on the Internet TV market after it began to grow rapidly in H2 2008, and has already signed agreements with television set manufacturers.
Television manufacturers are essentially outsourcing content provider and delivery services to third parties such as Voole through these partnerships.
