Youku, Coca Cola Win Lawsuit, Voole to Appeal
Netease Tech, 12/16/09
The Beijing Haidian District People's Court has thrown out a copyright infringement lawsuit brought against Chinese video site Youku and the Coca Cola Corporation by Chinese online VOD provider Voole on behalf of the Online Video Copyright Protection Alliance.
On November 26, Voole brought a joint liability lawsuit against Coca Cola, one of Youku's advertisers.
Editor's Note: Voole has announced that it will continue to file joint liability lawsuits against Youku's advertisers, including Coca Cola, Toyota, Adidas, and Chinese pharmaceutical company Wang Laoji. According to Hao Xia, Voole's legal affairs director, the company has notarized documentation of 589 movies being pirated on Youku, and the majority of companies whose advertisements appear in pre-show clips for the pirated movies will receive a letter from Voole's legal department. A Voole spokesperson has said that the Haidian court threw out the suit because the conditions surrounding the case were unclear, and thus Voole will collect more evidence and appeal the decision.
