Sohu IT, 12/15/09
An industry source has told foreign media that Chinese C2C and B2C e-commerce platform Taobao will release three customized handsets next year in cooperation with Lenovo Group (0992.HK), China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) and TCL Corporation (000100.SZ). The phones will reportedly come with pre-installed online payment and e-commerce mobile applications for both consumers and online store managers.
Lenovo confirmed that it is cooperating with Taobao, and in a separate notice said its Taobao-branded handset would come pre-installed with Taobao client software.
Taobao also plans to release mobile applications for Apple's iPhone and Windows Mobile handsets.
Editor's Note: Taobao has announced it will release the three phones some time around Chinese New Year (February 14, 2010). The three handsets are a customized Lenovo i61 named the "Lingsu;" a customized Hisense (600060.SH) E6 CDMA2000 EV-DO handset named "Fengyun" from China Telecom, and a customized TCL Alcatel-branded OT800 called the "Wushuang." The three phones will come equipped with the latest versions of Taobao's Suishen Gou ("Shop Anywhere") and Tao Zhanggui ("Taobao Shopkeeper") mobile applications, as well as Shuzi Shangcheng ("Digital Mall"), Mobile Alipay and Mobile Alitalk.
