China Unicom to Offer Wi-Fi Substitute for iPhones
21st Century Business Herald, 12/11/09
Yu Yingtao, general manager of China Unicom's (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) terminal subsidiary Unicom Huasheng Telecommunications Technology, has revealed that of the 100,000 iPhones sold, 71% have been sold with 2-year China Unicom subscriptions.
Yu also confirmed that the Unicom iPhones sold at present come with no Wi-Fi hardware. However, China Unicom is planning to release a "palmtop base station" service targeted toward families who already have broadband internet service at home. Users of the service will need only install a transmitter component, and mobile phones within 20 to 30 meters of the transmitter will be able to access the internet via the broadband connection. The broadcast range of the transmitter is 1/10 that of a normal Wi-Fi modem. Yu said that in the future, China Unicom may conduct a large-scale rollout of such equipment.
