Rumor: VeryCD Shutdown Inevitable
DoNews, 12/11/09
An industry insider has reported that the shutdown of Chinese online download portal VeryCD is inevitable, claiming that China's State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) has found the website guilty of violating two regulations concerning online audiovisual programming. The source said that VeryCD had also received warnings from SARFT for prior infractions, and was included on the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's (MIIT) website blacklist.
The source said VeryCD was one of several websites warned and fined in October 2008, when SARFT announced its third Survey of Internet Audiovisual Programming Services. SARFT found VeryCD was publishing films, television programs, documentaries and other programs containing content that was vulgar, violent and threatened national security/interests. VeryCD was also found in violation of a regulation requiring websites to obtain an Online Audio-Visual Broadcasting License before distributing video content online.
