China Telecom to Block All WAP Service Providers
Netease Tech, 12/04/09
China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) has released a statement pronouncing that, in accordance with government regulations demanding closure of pornographic sites, the operator will block all access to WAP sites from its service providers. During this time, China Telecom said it will carry out a rectification campaign, and impose blacklists and whitelists for WAP sites. The statement explained that regulation of WAP content proved exceedingly difficult due to tactics from WAP providers, who would constantly change their IP addresses or display different content at different times of the day, leaving China Telecom with no way to uproot the problem other than blocking all service providers for the time being. China Telecom said it would gradually open access to services that pass inspection, one by one.
Editor's Note: China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) announced earlier that it had closed down more than 130,000 unregistered websites during its crackdown on vulgar content and pornography. China Telecom also reported imposing reforms on 362 companies and terminating service to 226 companies. The operator also randomly selected 2,665 wireless value-added services for inspection, and reorganized 141 ISPs, shut down 49 unregistered WAP sites, and closed down 101 WAP sites found to have content that, while not pornographic, was deemed harmful nonetheless.
