Kingsoft, Holdfast to Expand Cooperation
People.com.cn, 11/30/09
Chinese online game operators Kingsoft (3888.HK) and Shanghai Holdfast Online Information Technology are developing platform interoperability as well as discussing merged operations, according to an industry insider. Zhan Zhenyang, COO for Kingsoft's gaming business, confirmed the news but did not reveal any details.
Another source at Kingsoft said that the two companies partnered to quietly launch Kingsoft's self-developed 2D martial arts MMORPG JX Online II Waizhuan in the middle of November, allowing Holdfast users to log into the game using their existing Holdfast account, with no additional registration required.
Zou Tao, CEO of Kingsoft's gaming division, responded to rumors that Kingsoft and Shanda Interactive (Nasdaq: SNDA) have signed an agreement for Kingsoft's self-developed pay-to-play 3D MMORPG JX Online 3, saying that it would be inappropriate to comment at this time and that Kingsoft, as a listed company, was obliged to follow market regulations when announcing any such news.
Sources within Kingsoft further report that, next month, the game operations department will expand its ranks, primarily in order to prepare for operation of new games. Kingsoft will also reportedly appoint a new vice president poached from Shanda management, but so far the new executive's identity cannot be confirmed.
