China Mobile Investigates WAP Partners for Illicit Content

China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) has announced that beginning November 30, it will suspend billing for all cooperating WAP service providers (SPs) and content providers (CPs) in preparation for an investigation of pornographic content. China Mobile plans to inspect service names, content, and promotional channels, forbid providers from using advertising alliances or other third-party promotional methods, and order providers to submit "Written Guarantee of Data Security" documents guaranteeing that their content contains nothing of a pornographic nature.
Editor's Note: GM Gao Nianshu of China Mobile's data services division said that pornographic WAP sites accounted for 0.2% of total WAP traffic, or RMB 20 mln in data traffic revenues - 0.052% of all of China Mobile's revenue. Gao said China Mobile is preparing to release Version 3.0 of its SP Partnership Management guidelines, which will prohibit SPs from developing any offline, advertising alliance, or website alliance partnerships.
