China Telecom Launches Product Targeting PHS Subscribers

According to China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) local subsidiary Xiamen Telecom, China Telecom has released a new "E-Surfing Super Wireless" product aimed at existing personal handyphone system (PHS) subscribers.
The main feature of the new "E-Surfing Super Wireless" phones is that they can retain existing PHS phone numbers. In addition, the new phones can receive short messages sent to the original PHS phone number, and short messages sent from the phone to anywhere in China will display the existing PHS phone number.
The new phones will have no monthly subscription fee, provided total calling charges exceed 20 RMB. Local calls are as low as RMB 0.1 per minute, and calling long distance from one's local area is RMB 0.2 per minute, as is roaming within one's home province. Custom ringtones, E-Surfing Assistant, and E-Surfing Mailbox services are free. Users can get nationwide free incoming calls if they join China Telecom's One Home or BizNavigator services.
