Voole Sues Industry Chain for Internet TV Copyright Violation
Legaldaily.com.cn, 10/27/09
Chinese video website Voole has filed two separate lawsuits - the first against Chinese consumer electronics manufacturer TCL Corporation (000100.SZ) and national electronics retailer Gome (0493.HK); and the second against P2P video delivery service developers PPStream and Xunlei - with the Beijing No.2 Intermediate People's Court. The suits call for the defendants to immediately cease production and sale of the MiTV series of internet televisions, to cease broadcast of movies and television shows named in the lawsuits, and to pay a total of RMB 500,000 in damages.
Voole claims to be the sole owner of online broadcast rights for the TV series "Wanggui Yu Annuo," "Shaolin Chuanqi II," and "Xunyicao," and says it did not license or allow their use by TCL and Xunlei. Users of TCL's MiTV internet TV can search for, download, and watch online videos through PPStream and Xunlei's software, including movies and television shows for which those companies do not have rebroadcast rights.
The cases are now being heard.
